Set Outlook on the Web As Your Mail Client

Imagine Learning users and contractors without company provided hardware may be configured with Microsoft 365 Frontline licenses which only allow access to the web based version of the Office suite. These instructions allow you to configure your web browser to treat Outlook for Office 365 on the web as your default mail client.

 Chrome Instructions

  1. Open Chrome and go to Settings.

  2. Scroll down and click on "Advanced."

  3. Under "Privacy and security," click on "Site settings."

  4. Scroll down and click on "Handlers."

  5. Find "mailto" and set it to "Allow sites to ask to become default handlers for protocols."

Firefox Instructions

  1. Open Firefox and go to Options.

  2. Click on "General" on the left sidebar.

  3. Scroll down to the "Applications" section.

  4. Find "mailto" and choose "Use Outlook Office 365 (web)" from the drop-down menu.

Edge Instructions

  1. Open Edge and go to Settings.

  2. Scroll down and click on "View advanced settings."

  3. Under "Privacy and services," find "Handlers."

  4. Click on "Manage" and set "Mailto" to "Outlook Office 365 (web)."

Safari Instructions

For Safari, you typically set the default mail application system-wide on macOS.

  1. Open "Mail" in your Applications folder.

  2. In the menu bar, go to "Mail" > "Preferences."

  3. In the "General" tab, find "Default email reader" and select "Outlook Office 365 (web)."

After making these changes, clicking on a mailto link should open Outlook on the web in a new compose email tab.
