CrowdStrike Workaround Safe Mode

A faulty CrowdStrike update may cause Windows computers to display a crash message shortly after starting.

Please plug your computer into the network with a cable if you are able to do so.

Before following these instructions restart your computer several times.

  • This may enable the computer to download an update that will resolve the issue and allow you to log in normally.

 Instructions

  1. Enter Windows Recovery Environment from Blank, Black, Blue screen

  2. On the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.

  3. After your device restarts, you'll see a list of options. Select option 5 from the list or press F5 for Safe Mode with Networking. (Per: Crowdstrike, it may help to be on a Wired Network for this.)

  4. Open File Explorer and select This PC

  5. Navigate to the following directory: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\CrowdStrike

  6. Locate any files beginning with “C-00000291”, and delete them.

  7. Boot the system normally
